Moore Creek Park 4-22-17

On April 22, the Woodland Outdoor Wanderers (WOW) will host a hike at Moore Creek Park in Napa County.  WOW will be hiking in the 900 acre Hennessey Unit which was purchased as watershed land by the City of Napa.  The city subsequently developed Conn Dam and Lake Hennessey in the 1940s.  A significant portion of the 7 to 8 mile loop trail will parallel the shoreline of the lake.  The shoreline trail will provide excellent bird watching of the grebes, coots and other water birds.  Hikers will then pass through open grasslands and oak woodlands on the climb up to the ridge line above that will provide panoramic views of the lake below and the surrounding forest and mountains.

This hike is rated moderately strenuous due to the length and the steep terrain along portions of the trail.  There is an option to shorten the hike and avoid the climbing if so desired by taking just the shoreline trail in and out.  More information about the park can be found at:

Hikers should dress appropriately for the conditions, wearing warm clothing in layers.  Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, snacks or a sack lunch, and binoculars for birdwatching.  There will be a river crossing so hikers should be prepared to get their feet wet.  Dogs on leash are permitted on the Hennessey Unit.

Hikers should gather at 8:00 AM at the Woodland Presbyterian Church at 1324 Columbia Drive (at the corner of W. Gibson Rd and CR 98) to sign in, form carpools and get driving directions.  Parking is free.  For more information call Paul Gorenzel or Kristina Norberg at (530) 668-1825.
