Rebekah Curry

A little about Rebekah Curry and discipleship training school:

Hey everyone! Thank you again to all who helped me raise the funds to come up here. I love it here in Alaska. It’s absolutely beautiful and I would be so happy to stay here if that’s where God wants me. There is so much need here. Alaska has an extremely high suicide rate and there are huge problems with alcohol and sexual abuse. Nearly every native child has been abused. There’s so much land over here with many villages so spread out and secluded that they are hard to reach. So much hurt was done to the natives, much of it by the Russian Orthodox church. We want to reconcile them and show God to the natives in such a way that we don’t “americanize” them or tell them what to do, but bring them back to worhipping God in their culture and their way! God has given each culture a unique, beautiful heritage in Him! We want them to realize this but also to heal them!

This discipleship training school is the most challenging, amazing thing I have ever experienced! Right now we’re still in the lecture phase. We’re taking a bunch of classes every week that stretch and challenge us, but are so good! I am learning so much and God is slowly revealing Himself more and more to me as I am ready. The goal is to strengthen our relationship with God/fill us so that we can go fill others. It’s simply about sharing love! God longs for an intimate relationship with everyone!

Besides classes, on Tuesdays, we go on a small community outreach (we’ve handed out flowers to people, picked up trash, prayed and asked God to show us where He wants us to go and then gone out and prayed for people), on Thursdays we go to a Christian operated cafe/coffee shop and hang out with the kids there, trying to develop relationships and show love to them. On Sundays we all help out at different churches. At my church I’ve been helping with the music, playing the piano and singing. We stay really busy and are all quite tired from the information overload!

This last weekend, we went to a youth conference in Anchorage to be leaders and share what God’s been teaching us. We are taught and then we learn to teach! The kids there were unsure at first, but they were so hungry for God and longing for a deeper relationship, to know God! Some of us shared testimonies, led music, played games, and we had some powerful teaching. We got to know those kids and see God speak to every one of them! We went to Wal Mart one day to share with people. First we prayed together and asked God for people/clues that He wanted us to see and pray for. Every one of those kids saw pictures and words from God and we went to Wal Mart and saw the people there who fit those descriptions and we were able to pray for them! It was so amazing! God likes to have fun with us! At the end a couple of them shared a small testimony in front of the whole church. It was amazing how God opened them up and spoke through them powerfully! It blew my mind, what God did in that weekend. I’m so glad I got to be a part of it. As God taught the kids and used us, that taught us as well.

I’m learning to hear God and to understand when He’s speaking to me. The one thing that matters is to be in relationship with God, to know how much He loves me and learn to love Him, and to know who I am (I am His daughter and perfect in His sight). From that comes everything else! God is slowly revealing Himself and completely blowing my mind! Jesus came that we might have life and have it more abundantly! The only thing stopping me, stopping us from having that is not knowing who we are and not believing! I encourage you to embrace that you are perfect, beautiful, loved, a daughter or son of God, a brother/sister to Jesus and a student of the Holy Spirit! And to ask God and believe! God is here in you and has given you everything and LOVES you. I long for everyone to experience God like this. It’s so amazing and blows my mind and I wish for everyone to go deeper!

Also I am finding the amazing depth and richness in the Scriptures. It’s beautiful! So much I didn’t really get before I’m now starting to and it absolutely amazes me. God is so beautiful, so sweet, so good. Oh, that everyone could know Him like this! He is so close, loves so much, longs for you! I’m learning also that it’s a journey for each of us, we’re all different and He meets us where we’re at and draws us deeper. His ultimate goal throughout the Bible is to be with us! Relationship with us!

Ok, here’s a couple experiences I would like to share. First, about tongues. They are real! The gifts of the Spirit are real! Someone prayed over me to speak in tongues. And, I felt fire welling up inside of me. No words came out, only incredible laughter, then tears, then laughter! I’m realizing that my laughter is like me talking with God! So much joy being in God’s presence! God has restored my joy to me! My middle name is joy, and the enemy tried to take it away, but God has restored it! I laugh so much!!!

Next, God used me to heal someone of hiccups once and a headache once! I prayed simply and both times it went away! It is so encouraging and exciting that God uses me!!!! Woohoo!!! It made me scream and shout and dance for joy! I’m so glad God loves to give me that! It brings me joy that He uses me like that! I’m learning to be faithful in the small things and God will give me more! I’m learning, and I know that more will come! All for God and for His glory! Also, I know that I will see angels one day! I know! I’ve prayed about it, and I know that one day, I’ll open my eyes, and I’ll see them!

So, I never really payed attention to supernatural things! People here see angels and demons, have healed and been healed, hear words of encouragement for other people, and see pictures in their mind from God. And the gifts of the Spirit are real and powerful! It’s all real and I want to go deeper! I know God’s taking me there!

I’m about to go to Ouzinkie, Alaska on Tuesday for a ten day trip to help build a house and reach out to the people there. I’m excited about it! I know God has great plans for us! Pretty soon we’ll be going to our outreach to St. Lawrence Island. We’ll be helping out with church services, hanging out with people, and simply sharing love! We’ll do whatever needs to be done! I am looking forward to being with some of the kids there. There is so much need and hurt! I love my team so much! They are my family!
I know that God has something amazing planned for my team. We’ve had several people say that this team especially is strong and strategic and God’s gonna do great things through us! I am so excited for what God has planned!

Some people think that mission work is about numbers. But that’s not it. It’s about first maintaining your relationship with God and then sharing it! If we don’t see results that’s ok. God uses everything and He loves it if we step out in obedience, even if we think noting comes from it. Also, if one person is saved out of this whole time, that is great! That person is worth it.

I miss you guys and love you so much! I’m praying about staying on as staff for a few years. God may have something else in mind for me, but I’m pretty sure that He wants me here in Alaska! He’s certainly given me a heart for it! I love Him so much, above all else! Grace, peace, and love to you all!

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God. To comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. That they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.” Isaiah 61:1-3
