Faith Assembly of God began at a time when the Assemblies of God were stressing the need for more churches to meet the growing population of our country.
Our Founding Pastor and his wife, Rev. Willis and Maydelle Hirschy answered the call of God to begin a church in Phoenix. They, along with Pastor Hirschy's parents, signed the loan papers and purchased the land upon which Faith Assembly of God was built.
Faith Assembly held its first meeting on October 23, 1955 in the music room of the Washington Elementary School at 27th Avenue and Northern Avenue.
The area where the church is located was at that time on the outskirts of a growing city. The five acres purchased for the church site was a decaying orchard. 15th Avenue did not extend south of Glendale Avenue. Between the church and 19th Avenue on the south side of Glendale Avenue was a lettuce field. The former Foremost Dairy Products, a processing plant formerly located on the Northwest corner of 19th Avenue and Glendale Avenue, was the closet building of any size.
The initial Church building, which has been remodeled and is being used for office space and classrooms, was constructed and the first meeting, on site, was held in February, 1956.
Pastor Hirschy's vision was for a Full Gospel Church founded on Christ, honoring the ministry of the Holy Spirit, with a strong missionary emphasis. It was his desire to establish a church that would endeavor to minister to the whole family, from the youngest to the oldest.
During the years from 1956 to 1963 the congregation continued to grow. The little chapel was so crowded that they were forced to go to two Sunday morning Services. In September 1963 a new sanctuary and educational wing was dedicated to the glory of God. The church continued to experience God's blessings. In April 1978 the Fellowship Hall was dedicated. It was built debt free.
Shortly after that time, Pastor Hirschy resigned, having served the church faithfully for 23 years.
Rev. John and Mildred Everett were asked to become the Pastors of Faith Assembly of God in the summer of 1978 and they continued to serve in that role until September, 1983, at which time they felt the Lord leading them to become traveling evangelists.
Following Pastor Everett, Rev. John Odell, who had grown up in the church, was asked to become the Pastor in the fall of 1983. Many in the church remembered him as a rather rambunctious youngster they affectionately called "Little Johnny".
Pastor John and Gaynell Odell served the church until the spring of 1986 at which time Rev. Robert Drake was asked to become the pastor in the summer of that year. During Pastor and Dawn Drake's tenure at Faith Assembly, they led the congregation in several much needed remodeling projects. After nearly four years as pastors, the Drakes accepted the call to pastor in Missouri in February, 1990. They are presently serving as pastors in Sierra Vista, Arizona.
In June, 1990, Faith Assembly of God extended an invitation to Rev. Elwin and Ranae Mack to become the pastor and they continue to serve at the present time, along with their son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Jeremy and Dana Mack, Youth Pastors.
Over the years, Faith Assembly of God has remained true to Pastor Hirschy's vision. We have endeavored to maintain a Full Gospel Church, built upon Jesus Christ, honoring the ministry of the Holy Spirit, with a strong emphasis on Missions. We have endeavored to provide ministries that strengthen the whole family. Royal Rangers, Girl's Ministries, Sunday School, Men's, Women's, and Youth Ministries continue to be important aspects of the church's ministry.
Over thirty men and women have entered the ministry from Faith Assembly of God. Three have become career missionaries.
Faith Assembly of God was founded to meet a need. That need still exists. It is the desire of the leadership of Faith Assembly to see this church continue as a strong Bible believing, Christ honoring, Pentecostal, Missions minded church, meeting the needs of people. To that end we dedicate ourselves until Jesus returns
