New Christmas album a message of joy after year of devastation

Australians could do with a dose of joy and hope this Christmas after a year of natural disasters, according to one of the nation’s largest churches.

To help spread the joy and get Australians in the Christmas spirit, Hillsong Church is releasing a new CD – “Born is the King” - featuring a mix of traditional Christmas songs and new music, all with a fresh “Aussie” feel.

Manager of Hillsong Music, Tim Whincop, says that while singing about reindeers and Santa Claus are a fun and important part of the season, music can really “touch the soul” and there is incredible meaning surrounding the occasion of Christmas.

“At the core of Christmas is a story of life and love. This album provides an opportunity for listeners to focus on the positive and uplifting reason for the season, while enjoying some of their favourite carols and songs,” he said.

Hillsong Church is one of Australia’s largest musical exports, with its albums regularly hitting the top of the charts both in Australia and across the world. But the church’s Senior Pastor Brian Houston says it’s never been about record sales.

“The purpose of this album – like all of our music – is to speak to the heart of people. The Christmas story is a message of hope and love; it is about family, faith and generosity and I believe that Australians have a lot to be hopeful for this year,” he said. “Australia is a great nation, filled with wonderful people and a strong sense of camaraderie. Christmas is a time to be joyful and thankful and to make lasting memories with friends and family.”

Ps Brian explained that the music of Hillsong enables the church to help people in practical ways through its charitable work.

Earlier this year Hillsong produced a special song to raise money for victims of the Queensland and New Zealand disasters, prompting Queensland Premier Anna Bligh to observe at the time that “the song reiterates that the one thing we must never lose is hope”.

“Born is the King” is an eight track EP and includes traditional Christmas favourites “Joy to the World”, “We Three Kings” and “O Holy Night” as well as songs written by the Hillsong team. It will be released on November 15 and can be pre-ordered through iTunes and the Hillsong Music website.
