Tuesday, June 11: Jeremiah 8: 18-22; 9: 1-10, 23-24; 1 Corinthians1:26-2:5
In what does God delight? Jeremiah 9: 24 says, "...I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight." God puts a high priority on us knowing God personally and living a life that reflects God's justice and God's rigteousness.

Monday, June 10: Jeremiah 5: 12-31; 6: 16-30
Jeremiah continued to warn the people about their sin. But the people refused to listen and went their own way instead. We face the same decisontoday, Do we go God's way or do we follow a path of our own choosing? Jeremiah 6:16 says, "Stand at the corsroads and loo; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls." The only way to find "rest and peace" is to walk on God's path.

 Sunday, June 9: Jeremiah 1: 1-19; 3: 6-25
Jeremiah was called by God to be a prophet to the southern kingdom of Israel. He confronted the people of Israel and the leaders with their sin. He was strong and courageous. However he attempted to avoid God's call in his life. He said, "I do not know how to speak, I am only a child." God gave him the words. Are you ready to answer God's call in your life?

Saturday, June 8: Isaiah 64: 1-12; 66: 1-13; Matthew 7: 7-12
Sin makes us unclean. We are unable to approach God. It is through faith in Jesus Christ and belief in his sacrifice that frees us from our sin. It is Jesus who gives to us the clearest picture of who God is and what God des. In Jesus we see a God who upsets the apple cart. IT seems those who lift themselves up will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted. God takes us in his arms and love us and forgives us and sets us on our feet.

Friday, June 7: Isaiah 58
True worship is more than just going to church. It is more than singing and praying and confessing. True worship is being in a living, vital relationship with God. More important even than true worship is how we treat the poor, helpless and oppressed.

Thursday, June 6: Isaiah 42: 1-4; 52: 13 - 53:12
The sect ion from Isaiah 42 is quoted in Matthew 12: 18-21. The references are to a chosen servant who reveals a character of gentlemess, encouragement, justice and truth. God will not toss you aside as things get rough, but instead will gently pick you up, dust you off and help you start on your way again. Those same attributes of the servant are needed desperately today. Might we be God's chosen servant?

Wednesday, June 5: Isaiah 40: Luke 3: 1-6
Judah had 100 years of toruble before Jerusalem would fall, then there would be 70 years of exile. God tells Isaiah, the prophet, to speak tenderly and to comfort Jerusalem. When your life seems to be falling apart, may God comfort you. You may not change what is happening to you, but knowing God is there to be with you will make a difference. Sometimes the only comfort we have is in the fact that we will be with God.

Tuesday, June 4: Isaiah 29; Mark 7: 1-13
Sometimes in our worship our rituals become just that, rituals. We do them but we really don't know why. There is a great story told about a congregation that as they sang the "Gloria Patri" always faced one wall in the church. One day a newcomer to the church asked why they did that. There wasn't a ready answer. After some research it was discovered that the words to the Gloria Patri used to be printed on that wall. However, the wall had long since ben painted over. The ritual became just something the congregation did without knowing why they were doing it.

Monday, June 3: Isaiah 7; 11
Isaiah 11:3-5    God judges with righteousness. We wish to be treated fairly. We hate those who base their judgments on outward appearance or after hearing rumors about what has happened. Only God is our perfect judge. May we strive to be like Christ in our judgment of others.

Saturday, June 1: John 3: 22-30; Matthew 15: 1-13
The Matthew passage is about a wedding. On the wedding day the bride and the groom, along with a great procession, returns to the groom's house for a feast. Sometimes that feast would last a week or more. In this story the virgins were not ready. They had neglected to purchase extra oil for their lamps. So, when the bridegroom came they didn't have any oil for their lamps and it was too late to join the feast. The kingdom of heaven is like that. We must be prepared at all times.

We are to love one another as Jesus loved us. And he gave his life for us. How do we practice "sacrificial" love? By listening, helping, encouraging, giving. Think of someone who needs that kind of love today. Give all the love you can and then give a little more.

Love is a Many Splendored Thing
Love makes the world go round
    Love me tender
    All you need is love
    Love will keep us together
I just called to say I love you

So many number one songs talk about love. Love is one of the greatest things in the world and one of the most fragile. Treat it with care and respect.

Wednesday, May 29: Song of Songs 5:2 - 6:3; 1 Corinthians 6:12 - 7:5
Every couple has problems. Some tie had passed since the wedding and now the bride feels some indifference has come into their relationship. She had become cool to her husbands advances and by the time she respnded to him, he had changed his mind. In verses 6- She begins to search for her husband.
I know every relationship changes. I no longer open the door for my wife when we go out (except on special occasions). It doesn't mean I love her any less. It is time to recapture that "first love" and remember why you made the commitment to each other in the first place. Focus on the positives in your relationship and build on those.

Thyey are transparent and open with each other and help one another. We are to honor God in all our relationships, especially the marriage bond.

Ecclesiastes 12: 13-14 are probably the most important verses in this book. We ultimately will have to stand before God. The good things we have done will be shown, as well as the bad. God will judge the quality of our lives.

Friday, May 24: Ecclesiastes 7:1 - 8:1
Good times and bad times come to everyone's life. We usually give ourselves the credit for the good times and then sometimes even blame God for the bad. When life appears to be too good, maybe God allows some of the difficult times to enter our lives to bring us back to God. Good things can come from bad experiences.

We always want more than we have. It seems to be the American way to compare ourselves to those who have it just a little better than we ourselves do. No matter how much you have it will never be enough if you are trying to create happiness by accumulating wealth. Depend upon God for your happiness.

 Tuesday, May 21: Ecclesiastes 3: 1-17
I like what Eugene Peterson has written about this chapter:
"This vibrant poetic passage looks at what seems to be opposites--birth and death, planting and reaping, crying and laughing--and rather than contrasting them, it incorporates them. It says that these are the realities of life that God puts together in his time, not ours. God invades our experience, whether than experience is joyful or sorrowful,a nd fills it with his presence, infuses it with his grace, and gives it meaning."
God is right here, right now!

Monday, May 20: Ecclesiastes 2: 1-16; 1 Corinthians 15: 50-58
Solomon in verse 11 says, "Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun." When you look at the achievements of Solomon, building the temple, a kingdom, a family; on the surface you see great success. But unless God is involved in the building it will come to nothing. Everything he built was temporal and what he wished to achieve was eternal. True satisfaction in life comes from following God's will.

The entire book of Ecclesiastes is full of practical wisdom. It tells us how to accomplish things in the weorld and gives advice as to how to find  and know eternal values. Solomon is attempting to lead people to seek happiness in God. The temporal things in life must be seen in light of what is eternal.

This is a scripture I have used at many funeral services. "A wife of noble character wh9o can find? She is worth far more than rubbies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. The picture of a woman in this last chapter of Proverbs is one of good character, great skills and compassion. This woman is one to aspire to be like. We can learn from her integrity and resourcefulness.

Friday, May 17: Proverbs 30
30: 7-9 - Having too much money can be dangerous. What is interesting is that having too little money is also dangerous. Jesus pointed out in Matthew 19: 23-24 that rich people often have trouble getting into God's kingdom. Paul, shows us we can learn to live whether we have little or whether we have plenty (Philippians 4:12). Money is not the root of all evil but it becomes that when money begins to rule our lives and decisions.

Thursday, May 16: Proverbs 22
22:6 "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." As a parent one of the greatest gifts we can give to our children is the ability to make wise choices. I believe this begins by helping them set boundaries for their lives. When you teach a child how to make decisions, you don't have to watch every single step they take. You will know they will make a wise choice because they will choose th right path.

God wants us to use our minds, to use the gifts God has given us to impact the outcome. As you move ahead in life ask for God's guidance as you go and trust in the answer.

Wisdom is portrayed as a woman who guides us in our lives and makes us succeed. How open are you to God's guidance in your life? Some people would term the guidance of the Spirit as our "conscience." This wisdom enables us to know the right thing to do. Be sure to open yourself to God's guidance at every stage of your life.
